SIG55 Workshop

The workshop on advanced NUmerical Methods for SCAle-Resolving Simulations (NUM-SCARS 2026) was held on 22–23 January 2026 at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The event was the inaugural workshop of the newly established ERCOFTAC Special Interest Group 55 (SIG55), which shares its name with the workshop, and marked the official launch of the SIG. NUM-SCARS brought together approx. sixty participants from eight countries, including established experts, early-career researchers, PhD students and industrial practitioners.

The programme was deliberately designed to be interactive: four keynote lectures and eleven invited talks were complemented by a poster session for young researchers and three roundtable discussions, addressing the future of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), opensource software and benchmarking, and the future directions and growth strategies of SIG55. Live polls allowed the whole audience to take part in the discussions, and their results are summarised in this report.
